Pretreatment Program

Welcome to UOSA’s Pretreatment Program information site

UOSA’s pretreatment program is a set of rules and systems that ensure industrial and commercial facilities clean up their wastewater before they send it into the public sewer system. Pretreatment is the first line of defense to protect both people and the environment.

Pretreatment protects our wastewater system by ensuring that harmful chemicals from industrial and commercial facilities are properly managed before they enter the sanitary sewer. At its core, pretreatment involves reducing, removing, or altering contaminants in wastewater discharges that could otherwise:

  • Disrupt the wastewater treatment process
  • Pose risks to plant workers and public health
  • Harm the environment and local waterways

UOSA’s Pretreatment Program is designed to be a leader in protecting public health, the environment, and our treatment works by actively researching, monitoring, evaluating, and when necessary, regulating industrial and commercial wastewater discharges to the plant. This program also ensures UOSA is adhering to public interests and meeting and exceeding all Local, State and Federal regulations.

Several elements make up UOSA’s Pretreatment Program, many of which are required by Local, State, and Federal law.

These parts include the:

  • Industrial User Surveys
  • Dental Rule and Amalgam program
  • Hauled Waste Program
  • Discharge Permit Applications/Permit Issuance
  • Local Limits
